Monday 20 January
The British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) and Amnesty International UK have come together to host a screening of Zurawski v Texas, a film about a group of women denied abortions in Texas who band together with a fearless attorney to sue the state government. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion as we come together for an evening of resistance on the day of the Presidential inauguration.
Heidi Stewart, CEO of BPAS, said:
“Tonight’s event is a powerful act of resistance and solidarity as we confront the alarming rollback of reproductive rights in the United States, and their global ramifications. The screening of Zurawski v Texas starkly reveals the devastating consequences of abortion bans, emphasising the urgent need to protect access to abortion as essential healthcare. By standing together, we can reaffirm our commitment to fighting for reproductive rights globally and offer hope and support to those impacted by these attacks on fundamental freedoms.”
Chiara Capraro, Amnesty International UK Gender Justice Programme Director, said:
“We have already had a taste of what a Trump presidency means for reproductive rights and bodily autonomy, so we are ready. We are aware that we cannot take reproductive rights for granted, not in the US or at home. The UK government should quickly fully decriminalise abortion and start treating it for what it is, healthcare.”
Proceeds for the event will go towards BPAS work in the UK, and for that of US-based Brigid Alliance.
Serra Sippell, Executive Director at The Brigid Alliance, said:
"The Brigid Alliance is the only organization in the US providing travel and logistical support for abortion patients forced to travel very long distances for care, especially later in pregnancy, at which point abortion becomes even more inaccessible. We're bracing for an incoming administration that, combined with a conservative majority in Congress and right wing Supreme Court, is likely to worsen restrictions for abortion care, and The Brigid Alliance is as dedicated as ever to helping as many people as possible access the abortion care they need and deserve. We are so grateful to BPAS and Amnesty International UK for their incredible generosity and solidarity in hosting this event. In addition to the much needed funds, it provides hope and inspiration during this difficult time."
Panellists for tonight’s event are:
- Stella Creasy MP
- Amy Flanagan, Producer, Zurawski v Texas
- Eszter Kismödi, Chief Executive at Sexual and Reproductive Health Matters
- Dr Sonia Adesara, Doctors for Choice
- Chiara Capraro, Amnesty International UK’s Gender Justice Programme Director
